Sweetwater Music Festival (Archival, 2011)
Have you wondered why such distinguished performers come to Owen Sound to play in the Sweetwater Music Festival?
Firstly, obviously, it’s because Mark Fewer, our Artistic Director, invites them, but it is also because of the enthusiasm and appreciation of a discriminating Owen Sound audience.
We are welcoming pianist, conductor and producer Gregory Oh; and Gilad Karni, prize-winning violist, collaborator in many outstanding performances of Chamber and Orchestral music. We look forward to hearing Annalee Patipatanakoon, violinist with the Gryphon Trio, and Terence Tam, violinist and pianist, currently concertmaster with the Victoria Symphony.
Welcome back to Denise Djokic, cellist, and John Novacek pianist, both of whom performed in last year’s outstanding Festival, as well as extraordinary bass player Joseph Phillips.
Cellist Roman Borys was a founding member of the Gryphon Trio and is the Artistic Director of the Ottawa Chamberfest. James Campbell needs little introduction, especially after his memorable performances at last year’s Festival. These two distinguished musicians, along with Mark, are responsible for this year’s programme.
Some past performers have alternative obligations this year. Jonathon Crow has become the TSO Concertmaster, and Douglas McNabney now directs the Toronto Summer Music Festival.
As usual, some of the music will be familiar, some novel and perhaps challenging, but be assured that all will be played with enough sensitivity, skill and panache to make you want more. Standing ovations are demanded by this level of music making.
How do they do it, year after year? Come and find out.
